Give Thanks for Two Great Saints who Died in the Lord – Betty Brice and Betsy Camp

When I became Executive Director of PRMI in 1990, I found myself covered by two wonderful intercessors, Betty Brice and Betsy Camp. For years they were major builders of this work in the Kingdom of God, each with their very different gifts and personalities. I am deeply indebted to both of them for their support of this ministry and for me and my family over all these years.

Marge Van Meter – another great saint in Michigan sent this report:

The memorial service for Betty Brice on Thursday truly reflected her life of prayer.  The program cover had this statement on it.: “A Service of Witness to the Resurrection in Loving Memory of Elizabeth ’Betty’ Ellen Brice.”

At one point her pastor said to all we who had gathered, “There is not a person here who Betty has not prayed for!” How wonderful.  The service concluded with the people singing the victorious, ”The Battle Hymn of the Republic”.

Norma Scheider and I represented PRMI.  Norma, Betty, Betsy and I got together monthly to pray for PRMI beginning when Ron Hill was president and encouraged regional prayer groups.  We did this until Betty and Betsy got too frail and had too many conflicting
medical appointments.

Elizabeth Ellen “Betty” Brice
(December 6, 1920 – August 5, 2010)

Went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 5, 2010. Betty was born on a farm in Central Lake, Michigan, December 6, 1920, to John Allen and Anna Murray Brown. The family moved to Onaway in 1927. Betty served her country for two years in the U.S. Navy Waves during World War II. She was honorably discharged in 1943, and resumed her studies at Michigan State College (now University) begun before the war. She graduated in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She was married on December 10, 1955, in Lansing, to Stuart Douglas (“Doug”) Brice. She worked several years for what was then the Michigan Department of Conservation. The family moved to Ypsilanti in 1961. Betty and her husband began attending the First Presbyterian Church of Ypsilanti. A series of personal crises led her to commit her heart to Jesus Christ, which changed her life.

She then became involved in volunteer work through the Washtenaw Child and Family Services, as well as the church’s hunger task force. An avid reader, she turned to reading her Bible, and comforted many with words “aptly spoken” (Proverbs 25:11) from Scripture. She was faithful in prayer, particularly with her church’s weekly Koinonia prayer group. In addition she wrote prayer meditations that encouraged many. She and her husband were also involved with the ecumenical Word of God Community and a Presbyterian renewal ministry, PRMI. They attended many PRMI conferences and she established an intercessory prayer network for pastors.

Betty Brice was an amazing woman of prayer. For over twenty years she was a remarkable Holy Spirit empowered intercessor for this ministry – Presbyterian-Reformed Ministries International. In addition she, like my own Mom, joined in that powerful and loving work of prayer for me and my own family. She had a special burden to pray for my middle daughter Rebecca who has now finished Fuller Theological Seminary and is headed into the gospel ministry. Thank you Betty, for your love and your prayers. While you are missed here on earth I am sure there is great celebration in heaven as you see Jesus, your Lord and Savior, face to face. Brad Long

Elizabeth Clements Camp – Betsy
(1917 – July 15, 2010)

Passed away peacefully on July 15 at her home in Ann Arbor, MI, at the age of 93 years. Born in 1917 to Helen and Hayes Clements, Betsy grew up in Wellsville, OH, with her siblings Don Clements, Louise Dithrich, and Dorothy Colledge, all of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children, Kenneth Camp (Diane), Beth Donaldson (Jay), Orrin Camp (Susan), and Christopher Camp (Joann); nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Betsy was a graduate of Spenserian Business College in Cleveland and worked for the anatomy department at Western Reserve University (Case-Western) Medical School. She was a homemaker for many years and in 1978 she moved to Michigan and ultimately became a supervisor of Washtenaw County Friend of the Court. Betsy was a long time member and active leader at First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor where she was an ordained Elder/Deacon. She was also a Commissioner to Presbytery for many years, a delegate to General Assembly and she was honored to receive the Presbyterian Women’s Lifelong Membership Award. Betsy was a lifelong student and avid reader who was driven by intellectual curiosity and a commitment to personal spiritual growth. She loved to discuss world events and new ideas and share her faith in her Lord and Savior. She passed on her love of learning to all around her and encouraged others to pursue their dreams. Betsy has been known as a woman of great faith for her entire adult life. A memorial service is planned for October 2, 2010 at 2 p.m., to be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor.
